Your Choices in Broadband Internet Access

Unless you live in a very rural area, chances are good that you have a broadband Internet provider.  If you do not, then you are truly missing out on what the Internet can be.  For instance, without a broadband connection, you cannot watch streaming video, play online games.  It can even be difficult to check your email, especially if some well-meaning friend or relative decided to send you an email stuffed with pictures.  If you are suffering with dialup, it's time to make a switch.  However, you'll need to know what your options are in the market.  What can you choose for broadband Internet?

DSL/Phone Company ' Unless you life in a rural, outlying area, then your phone company probably offers DSL Internet access.  DSL is capable of considerable speed.  However, the farther removed from the central hub in your area you are, the slower your connection speed will be.  In fact, in some outlying areas that have DSL, speeds are limited to just above dialup.  Of course, if you live in a more developed area, you have a wide range of speeds from which to choose, all the way up to 10 MBPS and more.  However, DSL is not your only option for broadband Internet access.

Your Cable Provider ' In most areas, cable Internet is available from your provider.  This is one of the fastest options on the market, though it does suffer from a few drawbacks.  For one, it is usually more expensive than DSL, at least more expensive than the average DSL speeds.  In addition, cable Internet service can be disconnected any time the cable company decides to do maintenance or has a repair issue with their lines.  Finally, cable Internet, while among the fastest options, is also a shared connection.  You will suffer slower speeds with more people getting online in your area.

Fiber Optics ' If you are one of the lucky few that live in an area where fiber optic lines are used on a regular basis, then you have access to the very fastest Internet connection possible.  Fiber optic lines are capable of providing you with incredibly fast Internet speeds.  However, fiber optic service is also very expensive, usually as much or more than cable service.  This means that it might be out of your price range.  In addition, fiber optic service is only available in a very limited number of cities in the US, as the technology has not been rolled out fully, due to the expense involved with installing it.

Wireless Solutions ' In some areas of the country, wireless Internet is a reality.  Where older wireless Internet options were very slow, modern 4G networks are capable of true broadband speeds.  This type of signal is sent from cell towers around your area, which means that it will be available within your home, without you having to connect to a phone line or a cable box.  In addition, you can take this type of connection with you.  As the signal is broadcast through towers, you are able to receive it while you travel, which is enormously convenient.
